DJ Wildman
Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined I’d have a 10 year old son…who DJs.
Two years ago, my Aunt Marissa was visiting me and we went to an event in Montauk. At the event there was a DJ set up with blankets in front of her station where she welcomed babies, toddlers and young children to come and play with her records, record player and assist with spinning at her turntables. Luke was immediately drawn over to her station and spent his entire time at the event with her. It was adorable. The DJ’s name was Natalie and we spent a long time talking about her business called BABY DJ SCHOOL. She told me that she DJ’s parties for kids + adults and she does in home DJ lessons.
When I got home that night I spoke to Gavin about all that I learned and he was immediately intrigued. So we set up time for him to chat with DJ Natalie and understand what would be involved in taking lessons and becoming a DJ. He was IN. BUT…it was going to take a great deal of dedication on his part…
For starters, we had to make an investment in the equipment. DJ Natalie was very clear that it would only be worth doing if Gavin was going to stay consistent with his lessons and practice as directed by her. DJ Natalie told us that with this sort of dedication as she was explaining it, Gavin could be DJ’ing events in a couple of years if he wanted to.
I told Gavin I would be happy to invest in the equipment if he agreed to pay me back for it after he booked his first gig. He agreed and away we went with getting him set up. Here is what he uses:
Control Board: Traktor Kontrol S2
Microphone and Cord
Computer Stand
Gavin took DJ lessons with DJ Natalie once a week for 2 years straight (and still going strong). He has been hired by several brands to DJ Kids parties such as Rockets of Awesome who hired Gavin (DJ WILDMAN!) to DJ their launch party at Foot Locker in Times Square. What a blast it was. Gavin ROCKED the house!
DJ Natalie also organizes concerts for her little DJ’s to play and practice at. Gavin got to play on stage at Club Cirkiz where his friends were in the audience dancing and cheering him on. He was also asked by his school to DJ their Halloween Monster Mash party last October and had all the kids dancing their costumes off for hours!
Last Halloween Gavin also participated in an article for the NY Post about how to celebrate halloween with kids and put together an awesome playlist for all to enjoy. To listen click here!
When the world blew up and we were home for months on end isolating from the Corona virus, Gavin was asked to virtually DJ the “Day Disco” Session every Wednesday for the members and friends of The Wonder. Gavin had tons of listeners each time he played and his set lists were so FUN to listen to and dance along with. I was so proud to see how he used his skills to keep his DJ’ing alive and well while we were in Quarantine! To listen to one of my favorite sets that he played for the Wonder click here. You can also find Gavin’s Corona Virus “Positive Vibes” playlist here.
While Gavin was set to DJ some pretty fantastic events right before the world shut down for Corona virus, he’s keeping up with his lessons virtually and will be back with a vengeance when the events industry resurfaces. Till then…if you’re looking for the best virtual DJ around OR a Kids DJ to spin for your children’s birthday party (while complying with the rules of guest count, masks, etc) then please get in touch. In the meantime, here are a few more of DJ Wildman’s playlists to check out…
