DIY Tie Dye Loungewear

So now that ALL we do is sit in our homes, working, reading, and online shopping, I figured I would put my skills to the test and MAKE something to wear instead of buying it. I’m loving all these cute tie dye sets out there, but most of them are pretty pricey.

Of course, I struggled to find any white bottoms on Amazon, Walmart, Target etc… because everyone is tie dying! Even kits are running low, so definitely be on the lookout for a full set if you can find one! In the meantime, you can buy some cute white sweatshirts, tanks and some individual color dyes through our Amazon Shop page!

So here’s what you need:

  1. tie dye kit- as long as you have even one color, you can make it gorgeous!

  2. baking soda

  3. rubber bands

  4. tarp/protection for your floors

  5. gloves- even dish gloves will work, just so you don’t stain your hands

Again, you can find most of this in our Amazon Shop on prime so you don’t need to go to the store!

Step 1: Using a little baking soda, wash your white clothing. DO NOT DRY. Let it spin dry in your washing machine, or ring out the water, but you want the fabric to have some moisture in it.

Step 2: To get the “all over spotted” look, all you have to do is bunch the fabric together like i did above. If you want a spiral, start in the middle by pinching the fabric and spinning, then holding it in place with rubber bands.

Step 3: Add your color! Try to add the color in large sections so it' doesn’t bleed together too much. In both cases, flip it over and add the same colors on the back side.

Step 4: Let it sit for 1-5 hours, depending on how bright you want the colors to be. If you want it to be more pastel like my sweatshirt, don’t wait too long!

Step 6: RINSE & WASH! Rinse first in a sink, but be careful and use gloves as the dye is fresh still. Don’t wash together with each other or other clothing items as the dye will continue to run through the wash. When it’s finished, check if you like the color! If you want it to be more pastel, soak it in a bucket with water and some bleach. Only soak it for a short time! The color will come out quickly so leave it in for 5 seconds and see if you like the color. Then WASH AGAIN to remove the bleach.

Step 7: Once your color is desirable, you can dry it! Keep in mind it will shrink if it’s cotton, so you can also lay flat to dry if you want to.

Step 8: This part is optional! I cut my crewneck at the bottom to get a cropped look. Feel free to play with that idea, but cut small amounts at a time so you don’t make it too short!

Step 9: DANCE IT OUT! Try on your new outfit, put on shoes, slip on pants (well, leggings, who are we kidding) and MOVE! We all could use a little movement, some cute clothes, and extra smiles right now.
