Easy DIY Backdrops for Any Virtual Party Theme

Remember a few weeks back when Seri talked about the Top 10 Virtual Party Themes? Well today I’m sharing a few of those themes taken to the next level with easy DIY backdrops to complete your at-home celebration! Listen, we’re all getting a little sick of zoom, but we also know that we’re probably not going to be celebrating with large groups for the foreseeable future. So why not get creative and make it fun?!

The thing about using any video conferencing platform, is that they really only shows a small portion of your wall in the background. So finding a way to cover that space if you’re attending a themed celebration can be SO easy. I opened my laptop, turned on the camera, and followed my own hands on the screen with tape until I reached the corners. I did this in all 4 corners to create my rectangle where I would create my backdrop! This way I wasn’t doing extra work to add decor where you wouldn’t even see it on camera.

So as you can see here, I only added my decorations within the taped off area, and on Zoom, you don’t even see the borders! So below I’m going to cover ideas to create multiple themed backdrops that fit perfectly with Seri’s Top 10 Virtual Party Themes!

UNICORNS

For this theme, I figured I would cut out some easy patterns using scrap papers I had already. Think anything pastel, iridescent or sparkly. I made stars, moons, and clouds because they seem to remind me of Unicorns and fairytales. Then, I used the backside of some clear packing tape to make strands along the backdrop area and then stuck the shapes all over the sticky parts to create the pattern. Bonus points if you have a unicorn party hat and matching pastel outfit to wear during your party!

RAINBOWS

You already got a quick preview of this theme, but RAINBOWS are always a hit. First of all, you wear any color and fit in with the theme. Second, this backdrop is beyond easy! Find some washi tape online or order for pickup at your local craft store and just STICK. I made mine into a diagonal stripe pattern in rainbow order, but you could also go vertically or horizontally, or get creative with some geometric shapes! Either way, play up the rainbow using washi tape is easy and completely damage free.

DISCO FEVER

Party people, you’ll love this one! Jam out to disco with this theme and have fun with it by getting dressed up in your most sparkly 70s attire. I used metallic streamers to make a simple striped background for this one. So easy, and it was ready within minutes. If you have a disco ball or disco themed costume at home, add that to the mix and you’re ready to party!

80s BABY

An 80s themed party is always a good idea. Break out your neon scrunchies and get ready to dance! For this backdrop, I used some basic, colorful papers to create a lightning bolt pattern. I love all the bold shapes of 80s designs, and this one is SO easy to achieve. Cut out a bunch of the same shape in different colors, attach to the wall using tape, and then dress in your favorite shoulder-padded outfit to match!

COOKING

And last but not least, a cooking party! Seri has been loving her virtual Zoom cooking party with her friends, and this is such an easy celebration to host from home. Do it up by adding a homemade backdrop and a costume to match- or at least your favorite chef’s hat! I chose to make big EGGS using poster board and yellow paint. So easy and simple, and really makes the wall come to life. Create your background based on what you’re making for your cooking party! Apple pie? Steak? Veggies? Have fun with drawing larger than life foods, painting them, and making a fun pattern on your wall.

If you have another theme in mind, you can easily customize to fit your party. Just mix and match any of these DIY methods and get creative!
