Twelve Random Things Making Us Smile
Okay so obviously, the news and media have been pretty HEAVY lately. Maggie, Shaylan and I have an Instagram message and text trail where we’ve been passing around links, articles, pop culture references, etc. that can provide a much needed laugh or smile throughout the week. Then...we catch Seri up on the highlights in our weekly team happy hour!
We’ve rounded up twelve of our most random favorites for you on the list below to enjoy!
SHAYLAN
Clueless on Netflix
UGH I love this movie SO much. I’m a nervous flier (remember flights!?) and Clueless is one of the movies I have downloaded on my iPad to watch if I need something that I’ve seen so many times that it’s just mindlessly comforting background noise. The 90s fashion is literally everything. The soundtrack (which I still own on CD) still holds up. I had tickets to see it again in theaters for the 25th anniversary in May. That was obviously canceled and OMG I was totally buggin...BUT it just hit Netflix! So just go watch Clueless. If for nothing else, to marvel at the fact that Paul Rudd truly does not age. And in conclusion, may I please remind you that it does not say “RSVP” on the Statue of Liberty. Thank you very much.
Pop-Tarts
I’ve been letting myself buy at least one absolute garbage treat on each of my quarantine grocery runs. I didn’t really eat them a lot growing up, but I do remember buying cinnamon sugar ones from the vending machine in middle school more often than anyone should. In adding Pop-Tarts to our rotation I discovered that my fiancé Rich had never had a Pop-Tart toasted… Like, what!? He always ate them as-is, or what I would consider a ‘raw’ Pop Tart. I truly could not stop laughing when he told me this. Wild. So we’ve been trying them all, including S’Mores (the best) and his mind has truly been blown.
Space Force on Netflix
This has gotten mixed reviews online, but Greg Daniels never lets me down and really I loved it. Not much else to say. if you’re into space, think the country is an absolute dumpster fire right now and you need a laugh - give it a go.
@JuniperFoxx on Instagram
I’ve been following this account for years and have loved watching the adventures of Juniper, Fig and Elmwood. They are three North American red foxes that were rescued from fur-farms, and their adoptive family includes dogs, snakes, opossum, lizards and more! Their mom has a heart of gold and has given them a great life full of love. More recently I've become incredibly invested in Reason. Reason is a snail that lives in her gecko, Rime’s, enclosure and basically acts as a snail janitor. I mean. I can’t even. His shell broke last week and she’s working on helping him to repair it. She posted all about it on her feed including a video of him enjoying some butternut squash that literally made my week. I’m pulling for you, Reason!
NATALIE
Graphic T-Shirts
Okay so lets be honest, everyone has that one thing they have been online shopping for throughout quarantine. Well graphic t-shirts are mine! I’ve never really been a t-shirt wearing type of gal but on Instagram I’ve seen so many cute ways to style them with ripped jeans, skirts, and boyfriend shorts. Plus this is the perfect thing to throw on for a chill day at home (which is pretty much everyday). I love a t-shirt with a cool message. Some of my most recent purchases have been this “A Woman’s Place is in the House & Senate” shirt by Different Bunch and this “Women Against White Supremacy” shirt by Full Circle Wear on Etsy.
@OverHeardNewYork on Instagram
Okay this account literally makes me LOL. They try to post things that are relevant to whats going on, so lately theres been a lot about “Karen’s”, protesting, quarantine, and everything in between. Listen - this account definitely isn’t for kids, there tends to be mature content on there. But its nice to get a little laugh as I mindlessly scroll through my feed.
Clueless (Again)
Yes I know that Shaylan already has this on her list, but I needed to mention it as well because I watched it for the first time a few weeks ago and automatically became OBSESSED. Cher is an icon and everything she says in the movie is worth repeating all day long. And you better believe I have a few Clueless t-shirts on my “to buy” list.
My Vegetable Garden
And last but not least, I had to mention my veggie garden. This year my garden is going STRONG. I put a heavy duty fence in to keep animals out and I meticulously weed my garden daily. This year my harvest shall include: tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, jalapeños, peppers, strawberries, and blueberries. I’m extra excited about the blueberry plant because that was a spontaneous purchase in the outdoor section of Lowe’s when I found that little guy on clearance for $3.25!!!!!
MAGGIE
If you watch this show already, I’m sure you have heard about the recent release of their newest season. If you DON’T watch this show…. WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR. It’s truly one of the most feel-good shows out there. It’s funny, touching, and filled with amazing stories of helping people turn their lives around for the better. Not to mention, this amazing group of gay men are the ones you should be listening to this month, as it’s pride month! They’re full of life wisdom- and they are truly FABULOUS. Each one of them bring me joy and inspiration for my own life!
This comedian on instagram has absolutely hysterical IGTV videos. I am constantly sending them to my friends and LOLing every time he releases a new one. One of the reasons he is so funny is because he plays every character in each skit. He doesn’t use costumes or sets or anything- he is simply amazing at imitating the characters he plays and satirizes them to a T. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
Benito Skinner is another comedian who posts amazing videos on his instagram. His style is certainly an acquired taste, but he is full of fabulous gay vibes and satirized pop culture icons and celebrities like Billie Eilish and the Kardashians. He’s also famous for imitating each astrology sign as a character and if you like to follow yours, you will totally relate to his impressions. Highly recommend a follow and a deep dive into his archives!
I’m an avid podcast listener, and this has become one that I look forward to each day. While so many podcasts only release once a week, these NYC sisters produce a show 5 days a week covering anything from pop culture, current events, and trashy TV shows. They have an awesome witty banter that’s a joy to listen to each day. It’s like looking forward to seeing 2 good friends for a chat over lunch time, and it really does feel like you know them after you listening regularly. If you’re a millennial looking for some good girly, content, give them a follow and join The Toasters! It’s certainly brought me some joy throughout quarantine!
