Dark N' Stormy

Cocktails have a very long history. They attained global popularity as of late but they were present for quite a while. Since 19th century, people mixed their drinks in order to find new and intriguing recipes. This is the way Dark ‘n’ Stormy came about.

In early 19th century, British Empire was one of the biggest colonial forces in the world. They managed that by having superior technology and navy. In order to satisfy all the sailors which were part of the army, British government had a policy of providing rum to them, no matter where they are stationed. Naturally, given that they had port in Bermuda, it was only logical they would provide rum to all the sailors that were on this island as well. During the late 1860s, Gosling family invented Gosling’s Black Seal which was distilled on Bermuda and it quickly became the most popular alcohol on the island. At the same time, Mister John Barritt had ginger beer production in his shop. It was only matter of time when one of the drunken sailors would try a mix made from these liquor. As the story goes, the cocktail got its name after World War 2. One sailor, while drinking the cocktail, said that the mixture has a “color of a cloud only a fool or a dead man would sail under”. Ingredients: • 2 ounces of Gosling’s Black Seal rum • 6 ounces of ginger beer (Barritt’s or Gosling’s)

First, put ice in the glass. Afterwards, pour the beer in. When the glass is filled with beer, you can start pouring rum over it. You need to do it gently so that the rum stays on top. This way, you will get the Dark ‘n’ Stormy effect.

Lastly, you can garnish the glass with wedge of lime. This excellent cocktail can be found in many different bars all over the world. One of them is the Canadian bar D.W. Alexander.
