A Girls Guide to the Superbowl
Superbowl is just over one week away. Do you care? I don’t! HA. Just kidding. Kinda. I care about:
1. The Commercials
2. The Half time show (Hoping for a good one let’s goooo Rihanna)
3. The safety of these players my G-d this game is barbaric.
With that said, here’s the Girls (who don’t care about football) guide to the superbowl:
BEVERAGES:
I don’t drink beer EXCEPT for this one cocktail - my Michelada. This cocktail is SO easy and I absolutely love it. Here’s how you make it:
Take a tall glass and cover the rim with Kosher salt. Fill with ice. Squeeze the juice of 1 lime and add a few drops of hot sauce. Fill the glass with your favorite beer - I use Negra Modelo for this drink.
For those who don’t drink alcohol and since we always have kids in attendance, I always set up a large spread of drinks such as themed soda (Coke, Dr. Pepper, Gingerale often come out with cans for the superbowl that have footballs on them), sparkling and still water bottles and some juice boxes.
FOOD:
This is where the fun happens. First, the table setting. Years ago I bought a piece of turf from Home Depot and now every superbowl I break it out to line my table with. It’s perfectly fitting looking just like a football field! I take it a step further and I add masking tape to represent the yard lines (is that what they are called? Probably not but you know what I’m talking about) and I have even been known to make a goal post out of empty beer cans by simply hot gluing them together!
For the menu, I either serve a menu themed to the teams playing like I did in this NY Post article or I serve traditional game day foods like wings, nachos and macaroni and cheese. Because the menu gets to be a bit heavy I like to lighten it up with fruit and veggies with an assortment of dips to nosh on throughout the evening.
DECOR:
In addition to my turf lined buffet table, I like to take the decor one step further with balloons. I either spell out GAME DAY on the wall with air filled letter balloons that I simply tape up OR I tape mini balloons that I fill with helium and write notes on like the names of the dishes that I’m serving.
One time, I set up a goal post with yellow balloons around the chalkboard that I used to have on my wall. I wrote the menu on the chalkboard but make it look like a scoreboard! So fun.
Another fun way to set the table if you don’t have any turf on hand is with kraft paper. Makes clean up super easy and is very easy to find at your local craft store.
GAME DAY FUN:
There are a few games that I like to play to keep the night interesting during all of those whistle blows and time outs…First, Game Day Bingo! You can find tons online and print out for each guest to play through the night. Use peanuts or popcorn to mark off your squares as you discover your boxes are fulfilled.
Another fun idea is to buy temporary tattoos and let your guests mark their glasses with their favorite saying like Game Day or Touch Down! They are so easy to apply and not expensive. Here’s a super cute set on Amazon!
I’ll leave you with one last pro tip…..DISPOSABLES! That football game is 3 hours long and that’s if they don’t go into over time which would make it even longer. The last thing you’re going to want to do at the end of the night is clean up! So make things simple for yourself and set out disposable plates, cutlery and napkins so you can recycle, toss and roll into bed the second that game ends. GO TEAM!
