Chef Luke Makes Savory Crepes

I’ll tell you something really awesome about kids which I’m sure you already know…
They try things when they are little and then they fly with what interests them most as they get older.

Both of my boys are athletic, love to play video games and each took on a unique skill:

Gavin = DJ’ing

Luke = Cooking

Talking about Luke today…

Luke took on cooking when he was about 3 years old. He’s always loved eating and trying new foods, and as a new mom, when people used to use the hashtag “start them young” I was like oh yeah…good idea!

So I did just that. I used to work with Luke as a young toddler to film cooking shows. He loved it. If you scroll through our Chef Luke Playlist on the LMP YouTube channel you can watch a few of them. His little voice was so damn cute. I’m so glad we got through the sheer pain of working with a toddler (in a very messy task) to have this footage of my little man.

After a while, we started to bring in friends to cook with Luke, like Daniela, the Kulinary Chef. She made some incredible recipes with Chef Luke and always had a craft to go along with it. Luke always had so much fun with Daniela and we still make her recipes to this day.

Through the years Luke has attended several birthday parties at Freshmade a cooking school that we love in the city.

This past school year I signed Luke up with one of Freshmade’s chefs for lessons in our home every Wednesday, so after each meal that Luke cooked, we could eat as a family.

It was so great. Luke LOVED cooking for us every week and took so much pride in doing it!

Then along came the pandemic, and we moved out to Long Island, where we have a much bigger kitchen. Luke was totally in his element. He grabbed his step stool and off he went cooking up a storm.

Chef Luke makes breakfast almost every morning (he makes the best slow cooked eggs I have ever eaten), he’s always helping me with side dishes, and sometimes makes his famous chicken parm for dinner.

He has been asking me to film another Chef Luke show, so I finally did! He wanted to make crepes (which he used to make with Chef Gaby of Freshmade) with a variety of savory toppings like ham, creme fraiche, smoked salmon, chopped egg and scallions.

It was unreal and gosh he’s so cute and so much easier to work with now that he’s older! Wow.

Big thank you to Crafty Maggie for her amazing skills editing the video. It’s so nice to have Chef Luke back in action! And of course while he was busy cooking in the kitchen…I was in all my glory setting the table with each of our favorite drinks for our lunch outside.

Enjoy Chef Luke’s latest video and you can find his recipe below (courtesy of Freshmade).

2 large eggs (room temperature)

1 tablespoon sugar

1/2 teaspoon salt

2 cups whole milk

1.5 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

chopped dill (optional)

Add eggs sugar and salt to a mixing bowl and bear for 2 minutes. Stir in the milk until combined.

Fold in the flour and baking powder, mixing until smooth.

Stir in oil and mix until batter is even. Add chopped dill if desired.

Cover the batter and let it rest for 10 minutes while you prep your toppings.

Heat your skillet and grease it lightly with oil or oil spray. Pour 1 ladle (about 1/4 cup) of batter into the pan and swirl it around to cover the bottom. Flip after about 1 minute. Cook the other side, remove from the pan, and stack on a serving platter. Cover your platter with a towel to keep warm as you cook the rest of your batter.

Add your toppings and enjoy!
