A First Birthday Party Over the Rainbow

Do you remember how we posted about the coolest baseball 4th birthday party for our friend Mikey a few weeks ago? Well, his little sister Skyler just turned one, and their parents asked us to create her a rainbow-themed party that they could remember forever.

Skyler's party took place at The Harmonie Club, which is located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Her mom and dad asked us to transform the traditional main ballroom into a bright and colorful space, filled with a ton of balloons and rainbows.

We focused our decor around all of the colors of the rainbow - red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple, plus cloud white. We wanted the guests to feel transported and really "wowed" when they entered the party, so we placed a custom sign that Maggie designed next to the elevator, which encouraged the guests to take the elevator to go "Over the Rainbow".

As soon as they stepped out of the elevator, guests were greeted by a rainbow balloon installation, which our friends at Brooklyn Balloon created on mirror that hangs in the hallway outside of the party room.

Since the main ballroom is a large space and has high ceilings, we also had Brooklyn Balloon create the most stunning custom jumbo sequin balloons, which we tied to our gold balloon weights and placed in the center of each table.  They made the balloons in rainbow colors and rose gold, with a variety of designs that said "Skyler", "One", "S", etc.

Brooklyn Balloon also created two specialty balloons - one as a portrait of the birthday girl and one as a glittery rainbow shooting star.

We worked with our friend Candy Twisted Balloons to create two epic balloon installations. First, she brought our vision to life for this incredible photo booth backdrop, complete with smiley face balloons. We asked MVS Studios to set up one of their fabulous photo booths in front of this installation, and the resulting photos turned out looking super cool.

Our main decor event at this party was the dessert table.  For Mikey's first birthday a few years ago, we created an epic dessert table, which our clients wanted us to recreate to fit the theme of Skyler's party. We asked Candy Twisted Balloons to create a “sunny day” balloon backdrop for this table, complete with a smiley sun and rainbow. Her creation absolutely blew us away with its intricacy and detail.

To complete the “sunny day” experience, we set out artificial grass on the top of the tables and placed a variety of white, yellow and red cake stands and platters on top to the grass to display the many gorgeous desserts. We asked our friend Making that Cake to create a variety of custom desserts to showcase on our desert table. First, she made gorgeous pink and white chocolate covered Oreos, adorned with pink and gold “S” and “1” detailing. Next were these beyond adorable vanilla sun cake pops, complete with a little pink bow.

Making that Cake also made mini brownie bites topped with yellow frosting, ice cream cupcake "cones" with rainbow frosting, and platters of rainbow bark.

Next on the dessert table, Betty of Biscotto Cookies blew us away yet again by creating the most stunning cookies to fit our theme in the shape of suns, clouds, raindrops and more.

In addition to the custom dessert items, we filled in the table with an assortment of other beautiful sweets - white chocolate-dipped pretzel rods with rainbow sprinkles by Fatty Sundays, macarons in rainbow colors by Maison du Macaron, mini donuts with white frosting in rainbow sprinkles by Doughnuttery, and a canister of rainbow licorice.

The talented Nine Cakes created a beautiful two-tiered rainbow heart cake, which we topped with a red glitter "1" candle.

To complete our dessert table we set out plastic bottles with rainbow lids and straws and filled them with milk, for the kids to grab as they loaded up on desserts and wash all of the delicious treats down. Maggie also created custom signage listing each dessert item, which we displayed in shot glasses filled with sprinkles in rainbow colors.

Finally, in each corner of the ballroom, we placed these rainbow balloon bouquets, which we worked with our friends at Village Party to create. These bouquets added an additional pop of color in the otherwise blank and boring corners.

With the balloon decor and dessert table set, we moved onto entertainment. The birthday girl attends music classes by our favorite kids band, Little Maestro’s, so her mom and dad asked them to play a 45-minute, interactive set during the party to get the kids dancing and playing games. We set them up in front of a backdrop of jumbo rose gold letter balloons that spelled SKYLER.

To entertain the kids once their set was over, we asked our friends Melinda and Donetta of Melinda’s Children’s Parties paint faces and create incredible balloon animals. Melinda and Donetta are always a huge hit at any kids party!

All of the entertainment kept the kids perfectly occupied so that the parents could enjoy the delicious brunch and drinks provided by The Harmonie Club.

Happy First Birthday, Skyler! We were so honored to be a part of your special day.
