I love to laugh. I mean, don’t you? Well I always have. I’m a happy person by nature and surround myself with the same. And it’s no secret…I watch a lot of tv. Well, good tv. I love the HBO and Showtime shows. I think they are brilliant. I also love the NBC Thursday night shows. From which stemmed my favorite tv show of all time – Seinfeld. Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David are my comedic idols. The most brilliant TV writers of my time who I enjoy so much that I watch the show about 3 times a day. It’s sick in the head, I do know that. And no doubt you’ll think I’m a terrible mom when I tell you that my 3.5 year old son watches one episode every night before bed. Well at least the sleep consultant in my friend Ilana of Mommy Shorts Toddler Sleep Rehab post would say so. But hey! Whatever works, right?
The other show that always had me hooked was Saturday Night Live. As a kid it was just the best watching Mike Meyers, a fellow Canadian who always made me so proud…and the cast at the time was one of the best. Adam Sandler, Chris Farley and Dana Carvey were amongst some of the few who would have me in stitches every Saturday night. Like like laugh out loud funny. As I grew up with this show that literally feels like it’s been on forever, I found a new love for a cast… in the best of Will Ferrell years. I mean, are you kidding me with those skits from back in the day? More Cowbell? Robert Goulet…Sherry O’Terry and Will doing the Spartans? Stop! Had me howling every time. I think the thing I loved most about this cast on SNL is they were so real. In so many of these scenes they broke down in laughter and it made you feel like you were right there with them.
Anyway, why am I talking about all of this? Well because the other day I had such fun chatting with the hilarious Rachel Dratch. Over coffee and a croissant I had the pleasure of getting to know someone who has also made me laugh so hard I snort (have you ever seen the SNL Lovers in a Hot Tub skit? Snort. Yes you will). It was pretty amazing. I later found out that she wrote a book. From what I read online and a friend who told me she was reading it …I had to get my hands on it. So I ordered a copy and will be reading this the second I set aboard the plane to Turks & Caicos later this week. Oh my gosh Gansevoort…Here I COME and I’m leaving the lil guys behind. YIKES! I’d be lying if I didn’t say I’m so excited but I’m gonna miss the heck outta them!
MOVING ON…
I have a book to give away today…Rachel’s memoir! Who wants to read this with me??!! From what I hear…she has had a whirlwind of a life post SNL. Some funny that will make you laugh some not so funny that might make you cry…and has shared it for everyone to experience with her. I would say the finest review on the book that I’ve read online so far was said best by her friend and another woman who I just can’t deal with cause she’s so damn funny – Amy Poehler. Here’s what she had to say…
Amy: Let’s read it out loud: “A hilarious look at how unpredictable and beautiful life can be. Like Dratch, A Girl Walks Into a Bar is honest, surprising, and always funny. Too bad Oprah isn’t on anymore ‘cause she would lose her shit over this book.” Oh god, it would be so good if you were on Oprah right now. I feel like she’s creeping her way back on, though. I feel like we can’t keep Oprah off for very long. – See more here.
